Item #104 - $3200.00 Roman Empire, 1st - 3rd c. AD. This is a silver figurine of the god Mercury, one of the most popular gods in the Roman Empire. Mercury was the inventor of the arts, and god of travelers and traders. He is depicted nude with the weight of his body resting on his right foot. The left leg is set slightly back. A cloak (chlamys) is draped over his left arm and he is holding a purse in his left hand. The right hand is pierced for the insertion of the caduceus or wand which Mercury is usually shown holding. He is also wearing the winged hat (petasos). The right leg has an ancient repair. The figurine was set on the stand afterwards. Measures 8cm high without the stand. Found in the Balkans. |
Item #75 - $1750.00 Roman Empire, circa 1st - 2rd Century AD. An amazing bronze vessel handle intricately and elaborately decorated with two seated sphinxes seated side by side. The sphinxes and the handle are inlaid with silver the silver can be seen in the eyes and wings in the sphinxes and the central rib of the handle. Elaborate handles such as this example were typically used on bronze kraters, amphorae, askoi and other types prevalent during this time period. Measures 7-1/4" long and 2-3/4" at it's widest part.
